   Steep Slope

In roofing terms, steep slope simply refers to the pitch of your roof, more specifically if you roof is 4/12" or steeper.  With most homes being in the steep slope category, the most popular type of roofing application is the famous architectural shingle. First developed and used in the 1950's, and with much improvement since then, this is a great choice for many homeowners. Architectural shingles are composed of fiberglass and asphault, installed on a roof in a roofing system, and are a valuable option with the longevity of the roof and warranty's that are included many times.

Composition

When making architectural shingles, manufacturers begin with a fiberglass mat covered with asphault. With a good shingle, there are three such layers

laminated together (tri-laminate) then covered with a granule that not only ads solar  protection, but this step gives the shingles its color and texture. You can have a single color, gradient color, or a mixed bag of color, which ads to the characteristic of the shingle and the home.

Roofing System

A roofing system keeps your homes roof functioning at full capacity- You want to stay well and dry don't you? The three major components to a roofing system are the underlayment, the metal work and the shingles. The underlayment functions as the foundation of the waterproofing system and varies depending on the climate. In particularly cold climates or in areas where there are many ice problems, an underlayment called Ice & Water is used and gives super peace of mind. Many applications use a heavy felt paper that does its job quite well. The metal work is where there are any joints, such as where the chimney is or at the eves. Lastly, the shingle itself is the first thing that comes into effect when the pitter patter of the rain starts, or when the summer heat beats down.

Benefits

These have proven themselves as a popular choice, with good reason! They are heavier than some of the other options, offering more protection to the roofing structure. They also have a high level of algae and fire resistance, can withstand high temperatures and typcally can withstand wind gusts of 110 mph! Woah!!! And to top that, they come with a transferable lifetime warranty, keeping you worry free for a long time!
